Infinite Ocean in a Cup! Savour of music from Dr. Jayanthi Kumaresh

With its vastness and depth beyond the sight, Music is often referred to as 'Anantha Saagaram' ( the Infinite Ocean). "Cup O' Carnatic" by Vidushi Dr. Jayanthi Kumaresh, a video series which influenced a lot of viewers, was an effort to handover the flavors of the infinite ocean with the piecemeal approach at the best.

"So many people write to me with queries on Veena and Music. Though initially I tried to answer them individually, due to time constraint, it became difficult. So I thought it will be nice to have a public platform to attend such queries so that every one can access it", Dr. Jayanthi explains the path that lead her to the creation of "Cup O' Carnatic".

To motivate young rasikas into enjoying and appreciating Carnatic music, the videos are purposely kept to a shorter duration.
Apart from its rich content and the effective presentation, what was so special about the series was its short duration. This in-fact had inspired even the non carnatic music followers to wait for each episode. The goal was that, by the time one finishes a cup of Tea or Coffee, they should have enjoyed the episode. "In today's fast paced world, time is a precious commodity. To motivate young rasikas into enjoying and appreciating Carnatic music, the videos are purposely kept to a shorter duration. The content is chosen in such a way that music students and rasikas will take away something from each episode", says Dr. Jayanthi. The Season-1 ended a few months back with thirteen highly successful episodes.

Now there is something for the music lovers to enjoy again. Much awaited Season-2 of "Cup O' Carnatic" is about to reach you. The first episode of the second season will be available on youtube and facebook from next Friday 15th June, 2018.

Dr. Jayanthi Kumaresh, the niece of Legendary Violin Guru and Musician Pathmabhooshan Sri Lalgudi Jayaraman, has the Swaras in her blood. She started learning music at a young age of three and went on sharpening the skills with her dedication. She is one of the youngest veena artistes to receive the A-TOP grading, the highest from All India Radio, and had performed at so many esteemed venues across the globe. Also, she had found the place among the torchbearers of Saraswati Veena. It is quite obvious that she started her video series with an episode that emphasizes the importance of saadhakam, the practice. After a short piece on the veena, she starts saying "Practice...! ( then a small delay before she continues)...Practice is the key in becoming a musician".

The lenght of that silence is so accurate like the pauses we see in between the phrases during the concerts of the genius musicians like her. The delay that she gave after the first word 'Practice' before the word 'practice' for the second time, has a such a depth! It stands for more than a million words and conveys the devotion of an artist and the importance the musicians and artists give to the saadhakam. "There is no short-cut to practice. But right practice is the most important thing", she adds. The duration of this first episode is 2.36 minutes.

'Namami Shankaram' : A Predestined Hymn in the Soul’s Journey

A girl whose thoughts were filled with classical dance, when grown up, married into the royal family of Maharaja Sri Swathi Thirunal—whose contributions to Mohiniyattam are priceless, and whose lifetime is considered the golden era of Mohiniyattam. She considers it as a blessing. Now, years later, she has again been handpicked by the Almighty to portray the life of Adi Shankaracharya through dance. In this conversation with Gopika Varma, PSB Nambiar Sooryavamsham explores the inspiration, research, and process behind ‘Namami Shankaram’, a Mohiniyattam portrayal of Adi Shankaracharya’s life. A dancer often senses a spark for a new choreography. Can you tell us how ‘Namami Shankaram’ first took shape in your mind? I was invited to perform for Adi Shankara Jayanthi in Indore in March 2017. I was confused about what to perform. One day, I went to my friend Krithika Subramanian’s house for dinner. Her mother-in-law was reading a commentary on Adi Shankaracharya. I asked her f...

The First Lesson - By Mysore Vasudevacharya

M ysore Vasudevacharya, doesn't need any introduction among the the Carnatic Music Devotees. Many popular compositions like 'Broche varevarura' in Kamas, 'Mamavatu sri Sarasvati' in Hindolam, 'Bhajare Re Manasa' in Abheri, 'Ninne Nammitinayya Sri Rama' in SimhendraMadhyamam are the contribution of this great Musician who belonged to the 'Shishya Parampara' of Sri Thyagara Swami, forerunner among the Trinities of Carnatic Music. We found an old article written by him- published somewhere in between 1900 -1961, recalling the days he spent with his Guru - Sri Patnam Subramania Iyer around 1870s! Those words, like his compositions, were flowing out from the heart of purity. He writes : Says Bhagavadgeetha. You should serve your Guru with devotion and sincerity; you should prostrate at his feet; you should ask him questions and get your doubts cleared; you are, then, ready for the road to 'Brahmagnana' . Who is a G...
