”Art revives the Human”, Dr. Kiran Seth


For the last 42 years, Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music And Culture Amongst Youth (SPIC MACAY) has been in a huge effort to introduce the rich cultural heritage of the nation to the students. Founder Chairman (Pathmasree) Dr. Kiran Seth is the guiding force of this voluntary organization. "Art revives the Human. There is no better way to refine you than the Art!", says Dr.Seth. He , during his recent visit to Kerala(m) for an Ayurvedic wellness treatment, talked with the media.
  • How can a mechanical engineer be a promoter of Art !
    • Art helps you to be The Best in any field. It has the ability to bestow the mindfulness one needs for the same. It help us to carefully bring out the best Teacher, Scientist, Player in us. The renowned scientist Albert Einstein was a good Violinist. Art plays a major role in shaping a generation that is apt for this new age.

  • Could you tell us about the artform you like the most?
    • Though I like all of them, have a slight inclination towards Kootiyaattam. Also, the artist like Kootiyaattam Maestro Ammannur Sri Madhava Chakyar. After Kootiyattam my next love is Drupad.

  • It will be nice to know how you compare the Western Classical Music to Indian Classical Music?
    • First of all I would like to say that both are of the same concept, but have different routes. Western Classical Music is a beautiful 'SwaraLaya', one can say, where all the Director, Singer and the Instrumentalists flow united. Indian Classical Music too is based on Swara and Laya. Rather than the performance, it is about the Experience!

  • Please express your opinion on the Fake coins in the field of art..!
    • Though it may not be able to identify a glass piece and a diamond easily, once it will be in the light for sure. One of the aims of SPIC MACAY is to make the society able to disctinct the real from the fake.

    • Yes, I have personal relationship with the Gurus like Ammannur, Kalamandalam Krishnan Nair, Ramankutty Nair, Kalamandalam Gopi.
  • About the future actions of SPIC MACAY?
    • SPIC MACAY aims to reach each and every schools and colleges and thus to spread its work in between students. Awareness for the parents is another. SPIC MACAY aims to bringout the inner self of the students.

Nrithya Seva Mani by Cleveland Thyagaraja Festival to Kalasree Dr Sunanda Nair

C leveland Thyagaraja Festival's Nrithya Seva Mani award will be presented to the renowned Mohiniyattam exponent Dr. Sunanda Nair. The title of Nrithya Seva Mani is bestowed upon an individual who has made a lasting contribution to Classical Dance through propagation and demonstration. Senior disciple of Pathmabhushan Dr Kanak Rele, Dr. Sunanda Nair is one of the foremost exponents of the art today. She is the first student to complete Masters Degree in Mohiniyattam in India. Fourth WOCUE RasaNavam is announced

T his time, while considering the fourth WOCUE rasanavam – something special captures, we wondered if any one could have taken their eyes away from the beauty of the brush strokes by the sun on this little green globe, amazingly captured by Sri Kundan De with his lense. Arupa Lahiri , the renowned dancer, underlines her name (literally means without form, which really is the ultimate form of beauty) with her presence- that is perfectly in tune with the nature! Her expression creates life over the broken wood on the right. The colors in the frame, let it be the nature or the costume, seems interwoven, even the contrast ones. T oday is a red letter day for me as I attended Kanakabhishekam of Prof T N Krishnan Sir and his Dharampatni Smt Kamala Ji on the occasion of 90 th Birth Day celebration of the violin Legend. Amidst the chanting of Vedic mantras, Havan, Pooja to Lord Guruvayurappa, Nadaswaram by Vidwan Seshampatti Sivalimgam, felicitation by Governor of Tamil Nadu the celebration culminated with Abhishekam of the couple from the vessel of yagna rituals with everyone singing Gowri Kalyana Vaibhavame. Post the Abhishekam the Couple were resplendent while seated, as people lined up to touch their feet and obtain Mangala Akshadai. I am very very blessed to witness Parameswar Parvathi and was so overwhelmed that I could wet their holy feet with Aananda Bashpam ( tears of joy ). Where the Artist Disappears, the Art Lives On - Dr. Sunanda Nair

W hat does a five-decade sadhana give to a practitioner? The sadhaka disappears, and the art speaks through the artist. What Dr. Sunanda Nair gave at Rose Theatre Brampton was a riveting 30–40 minutes of performance. The program, held on November 17, was part of the Umang Festival – Light of Hope, organized and curated by Mrudanga by Enakshi Sinha from Canada, supported by the Department of Heritage Canada and the Ontario Arts Council (OCAF). C an we consider the Tiger as symbol of beauty and strength of the rich Heritage of India? It will not be wrong if we do, as it was a tiger that became the cause in ‘discovering’ the Nation’s unknown treasure-Ajanta Caves! Yes, such a discovery was a result of a Tiger chase by John Smith, a young British cavalry officer. Don’t know if John Smith succeeded in hunting the tiger. I f each year is a beat, today the second cycle of the twelve beat Ekthal is completed, after the demise of the Maharaj of Thaal - Pandit Samta Prasad (Gudai Maharaj). Of course, his life was not different from his own words: "The whole life of a tabla artiste is dedicated to finding a special beat with the tali and the khali . They reside in his heart, because his soul rests and throbs with the thaala of measured matras" . He is a musician who had dominance over both the baayan and tabla.
